چکیده

Facies models are used to better capture heterogeneity in mineral deposits and petroleum reservoirs. Facies are often considered as mutually exclusive and exhaustive at the scale of the geological model. These two assumptions are needed for sequential indicator simulation and most other facies modeling techniques; however, the assumption that an entire grid block consists of one facies type becomes unreasonable as the scale increases. Most geological models are built at a scale that is larger than the scale of variation of facies. Mixing of multiple facies types within a grid cell is common, especially in zones of transition between different facies. This paper develops a new technique to address the issue of non-exclusivity of facies within grid cells. The approach quantifies the uncertainty resulting from majority-vote upscaling of facies from core or well log scale to the grid cell scale and utilizes this uncertainty to build better models of continuous reservoir properties such as bitumen grade. Uncertainty is quantified using a measure of entropy that is capable of handling situations where there may be similarity between different facies types. A methodology to implement entropy in geomodeling is introduced and demonstrated with several small examples. An example involving real data from the McMurray formation of Total’s Joslyn lease is used to demonstrate the improvement in accuracy compared with traditional modeling workflows. & 2012 Elsevier Ltd. Assessment of an ore body internal dilution based on multivariate geostatistical simulation using exploratory drill hole data

Dilution can best be defined as the proportion of waste tonnage to the total weight of ore and waste in each block. Predicting the internal dilution based on geological boundaries of waste and ore in each block can help engineers to develop more reliable long-term planning designs in mining activities. This paper presents a method to calculate the geological internal dilution in each block and ...

A sequential indicator simulation program for categorical variables with point and block data: BlockSIS

Stochastic simulation of facies or geologic units is important before the assignment of continuous rock properties. Sequential indicator simulation (SIS) remains a reasonable approach when there are no clear genetic shapes that could be put into object-based modeling. Constraining SIS to soft secondary data coming from geological interpretation or geophysical measurements is important. There ar...

Geostatistical simulation of dyke systems in Sungun porphyry copper deposit, Iran

Post-mineralization activities may cause difficulties in the process of ore modeling in porphyry deposits. Sungun, NW Iran, is one of the porphyry copper deposits, in which dyke intrusions have made ore modeling more complicated than expected. Among different kinds of dykes, two types were chosen and the consequent geostatistical analyses were applied on. In this study, simple directional vario...

Transiogram: A spatial relationship measure for categorical data

Categorical geographical variables are normally classified into multinomial classes which are mutually exclusive and visualized as area-class maps. Typical categorical variables such as soil types and land cover classes are multinomial and exhibit complex interclass relationships. Interclass relationships may include three situations: cross-correlation (i.e. interdependency), neighbouring situa...
